Some work in the cities and some even work overseas. There are other sources of income available in the community like making wood and bamboo furniture and blacksmithing. However, the thing that hinders the community people to pursue this venture is the lack of capital.
The source of living of most of the people in this barangay is by means of farming. They plant various crops such as rice, corn, banana, and others. They use what they harvest for their daily consumption as well as to earn money for their needs. In addition to these, they also raise livestock. To mention a few, they raise carabaos, cows, pigs, goats, chickens and others. The barangay is also abundant of rubber and coconut trees which the people utilize as an additional source of income.
Since farming is their main source of livelihood, the people in this community find it hard that there is insufficient water supply for their farm needs. Also, they lack potable water supply for their own consumption. Therefore, they resort to alternative water sources such as deep wells and rivers. The source of electricity of Barangay Lawaan comes from Poblacion through the provincial road. Unfortunately, not all residents can afford to avail an electrical line for their homes.
Due to the lack of potable and safe water supply, some residents experience water-borne diseases. In general, the health status of the people in this barangay is poor. Because of financial constraints, the people could not seek medical attention even for simple ailments such as cough, colds, fever, and headache. Because of this constraint, the people resort going to indigenous healers for healing. Currently, Barangay Lawaan has one health center, one nurse, one midwife, and three barangay health workers. The nurse who is employed under the Nurse Deployment Program (NDP) of DOH visits every Thursday of the week to implement different projects of the Regional Health Unit (RHU) to the barangay level. Also, the midwife visits once a month to deliver health care services to pregnant mothers.
On the educational aspect, Barangay Lawaan has a functional elementary school called Lawaan Elementary School. It has ten teaching staff, with approximately 300 students enrolled. However, the main problem of the school is the lack of classrooms to cater more students since the number of children that needs to go to school increases yearly. Aside from this, there is also no mini covered court which can be used for the schools activities. Through the years, the school has produced graduates which are now professionals.
Though there are things that need to be improved in terms of health, sanitation, and education among others, Barangay Lawaan is geared towards health, social, and economic improvement. In a nutshell, Barangay Lawaan is a barangay inhabited by people who are very hospitable and peace-loving.
