Reflection

WE ARE a people who prefer to cop out of unpleasant situations and leave it to others later  to deal with them. We seldom take personal accountability  for the present and the future, and blame the past for the mess we find ourselves in. We expect somebody else or nameless things like the government or the church to make things better for us- to make our lives better. BUT THEY NEVER DO. Because we never realize that each of us is the government and each one of us is the church. That actually, we never get to ponder how important it is to solve our live’s problems first before meddling with others’. In that way, we get to live the life we endlessly yearned for.
As members of the youth sector and as future doctors, we advocate for the underprivileged, the unfortunate, the degraded and the broken. And growing up, we realized that there are a lot of things that we have to work really hard for to bring about CHANGE in the community we engage ourselves in.

Truly, at this very early stage of being a group of medical students from a prestigious medical school, it has been such a great opportunity to learn the fundamentals of community medicine. Thus:

⦁    As medical students with “good intentions”, it is not just our duty to implement projects in the communities but more importantly, a good and thorough community assessment & diagnosis and opinions about the projects must come from the people themselves, consulting them, and helping them develop self reliance, so as the people will accept the projects wholeheartedly. And eventually, the community people will live a meaningful life with a sense of social & civic responsibility.

⦁    Also, as healthcare providers, let us ALWAYS  fulfill our duties as “aegris advocatus”. Meaning, patient’s advocate. As future doctors, it is one of our greatest responsibility to make sure that our patients’ rights are justified and even the rights of the community as a whole. we must protect them, educate them and help them at all cost.

In a nutshell, being a future doctor impacting lives in the community is truly a gift. Indeed, it is an honor to be entrusted with another human being’s health and well-being. Patients trust their physicians with their most personal and intimate matters. In hearing people’s stories and helping people at their most vulnerable, doctors have a unique window into the human experience. Finally, it is just right to end by stipulating the school’s motto: WE EXIST NOT ONLY FOR OURSELVES BUT ALSO FOR OTHERS
